Cheaper & Chic of the Week

Screen Shot 2014-03-19 at 8.51.09 AMAre you all loving the new Domino Magazine? I know I am. I really enjoy the magazine’s new format, and I think that the idea of making things available for sale through an online shop is a fantastic idea. In the latest issue of Domino, there is a small section titled, “robert finds it,” where the magazine’s Creative Director, Robert Leleux, sources a product. In this case he is talking about leopard velvet ottomans in Elsie de Wolfe’s Sutton Place apartment. As big Elsie de Wolfe fan I was immediately drawn to this piece. Robert advocates getting Calico Corners “Jamil” velvet at $39.99/yard and upholstering the “Rocco” ottoman from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams at $800. Well Lacquered Lifers … you know we can do better than that. Screen Shot 2014-03-18 at 11.14.56 PMI do like Robert’s choice of Calico Corners “Jamil” velvet. At $39.99/yard that is a good price for patterned velvet, and on a smaller ottoman you shouldn’t need more than a couple yards. Screen Shot 2014-03-19 at 9.30.31 AMWhile the “Rocco” ottoman from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams is beautiful, $800 is not cheap. Especially for a small accent piece such as a leopard ottoman. I think we can do better than $800.

Screen Shot 2014-03-18 at 11.12.41 PMEnter the Ava Storage Ottoman from Urban Outfitters. At $11o it is much cheaper than the Rocco ottoman, and it has room to store things. Although Elsie’s NYC apartment was quite large, I know most of us don’t suffer from an over abundance of storage space in our apartments. A living room ottoman such as this one is a perfect place for tv clickers, an extra throw, perhaps even your magazines … although let’s be honest, most of us like to display those. Screen Shot 2014-03-18 at 11.12.50 PMThe scale is great, and so is the price. So much so that you might even get a pair.
