Out East

Tommy7Good Morning Lacquered Lifers! I flew up north and came out east yesterday to start a project with a new client, and in honor of my being on the South Fork, I thought I would share again one of my favorite East Hampton cottages, decorated by my favorite, you guessed it, Tom Scheerer. This house has that comfortable yet very chic aesthetic that is a signature of Tom Scheerer’s work, and which is why his work is always at the top of my list. Obviously it helps that the historic cottage itself has great bones – note the beams, the woodwork, the fireplace, the windows(!) – but Scheerer’s decorating plays to the bones of this cottage perfectly – some antique, some not, cozy yet sophisticated … the epitome of old East Hampton. Tommy4 Tommy3 Tommy1Tommy6Tommy5Tommy2Photos via House Beautiful

Favorite Harbour

India Hicks 1What would a beach week at Lacquered Life be, without featuring some of my favorite “beachy” tastemakers?  Two of my all time favorites are Harbour Island locals, Tom Scheerer (obviously) and India Hicks. I love the nature of all of these interiors spaces that seem to say, “Sit down in your wet bathing suit, put your sandy feet up, and have a planters punch.” Well, at least that is what it says in my mind. The stylish yet practical vibe of each of these vignettes, note hats on the wall and beach bags at the ready, is what caribbean living is all about, and why I am so excited to head to Jamaica on Friday.Interiors of Tom Scheerer for BookIndia Hicks 3PortraitsIndia Hicks 5179-TScheerer_CashBox_50469I highly recommend following India Hicks on Instagram and Tom Scheerer on Instagram for more photos of life in Harbour Island. Also if you need a recommendation on where to stay in Harbour Island, my dear friend Chassity over at Look Linger Love just came back from a stay at The Dunmore, and it looks like heaven. Also, you can actually rent a house owned and decorated by India Hicks(!), here. And finally, below is a picture from our guest room here in Charleston, where these two island tastemakers have definitely had an influence … Portraits, Interiors

Talking with Tom

Screen Shot 2014-04-14 at 9.37.45 AMHave you checked out the Tom Scheerer interview on 1st dibs? You all know the huge Scheerer fan that I am, so this is obviously right up my alley. In the interview, Scheerer refers to his style as “No nonsense American decorating;” and discusses the inspiration of Hicks and Baldwin, his love of the Saarinen table, and spending time at his home in Paris perfecting “the art of doing nothing.”

In the interview, Scheerer goes on to give his opinions on entertaining, tell us about his new favorite app (instagram), what music he is listening to,  his favorite restaurants, and even what types of gifts he likes to give. At the end of the interview, Scheerer also gives us his quick picks of things he likes that are for sale on 1st dibs right now … so essentially if you purchase one of those items, it is as if Scheerer was helping you decorate your home. So head on over to 1st dibs and check out the interview with Tom Scheerer. Also, if you still have yet to purchase Scheerer’s book, Tom Scheerer Decorates, read my review here, I highly recommend it.
