Cement Factory, Anyone?

After getting a teaser of this building in this month’s Elle Decor, I knew I had to find more pictures, and that I had to share it with you all. This is the home and office of architect Ricardo Bofill, outside Barcelona, Spain. A former cement factory, this is one of the largest and most unique adaptive reuse projects that I have ever seen. A favorite catch phrase of preservationists, I have discussed adaptive reuse before, but for those of you new readers I will give a quick explanation. Adaptive reuse means giving new life to an existing building – and when I say new life, I mean an entirely different life from its previous incarnation. Case in point, cement factory to live/work space. Preservationists love adaptive reuse projects because it creates new opportunities for old buildings, allowing them to continue to exist with a new purpose.
