In Remembrance: Oscar de la Renta

Oscar 3Renowned fashion designer Oscar de la Renta died yesterday, he was 82. I have always been a serious admirer of Mr. de la Renta’s, despite the fact I have never owned one of his pieces. Reading Vogue and watching red carpets over the years, I always thought that when my red carpet moment came, there would be no other choice for me but Oscar de la Renta. While I have yet to have my red carpet moment, my appreciation for and love of Mr. de la Renta’s designs has not waned. Through his designs, Mr. de la Renta showed his understanding of the female form, and her desire to look beautiful. One of his most oft quoted comments was, “Always walk like there are three men walking behind you.”
Oscar 7His love for designing clothes was matched only by his love of his wife Annette and of gardening, particularly in his home country of the Dominican Republic. He and Annette could often be found on their hands and knees in the soil of their property in Punta Cana. More familiar with the climate and soil conditions on the southern shore of the DR in Casa de Campo, de la Renta had originally envisioned a lush, tropical, flowering garden here in Punta Cana. However, when the couple realized that the climate and soil conditions didn’t support that, de la Renta went on to design a contained jungle-like environment, with a series of garden rooms connected by pathways, gates, and living archways. So today, in memory of an extremely talented gentleman, I leave you with pictures of the de la Renta’s garden in the Dominican, a place that stands as a living and growing memory.Oscar 10 Oscar 8Oscar 4

Dinner with Jackie … & Patricia, & Giancarlo, & Cornelia …

IMG_6332Good morning Lacquered Lifers! Making plans to do some entertaining at home this weekend? Well then do I have a book for you. Available from Assouline is Dinner Diaries: Reviving the Art of the Hostess Book by Daniel Cappello. Taking you into the homes and the minds of some of today’s best hosts/hostesses, Cappello presents each person with a questionnaire about hosting dinner parties, “what music, what food, what lighting” and they respond to his questions in their own handwriting – which just feels so chic. Below are some of my favorites … cornelia-guest Giancarlo patricia-herreraIn addition to these completed questionnaires, Cappello includes some blank ones for you to fill out yourself, or for you to distribute to some of the great hosts/hostesses in your life, so that you may capture their expertise forever. The book also contains some invaluable tips for both the guest and for the host and hostess. Below are some of my favorites.

Tips for the Guest:

– A good guest arrives ready to interact with other guests. Read the newspaper, a magazine article, or have an interesting story to tell. Avoid talking about yourself.

– When it comes to dinner conversation, make love, not war. Avoid talk of politics, but welcome talk of sex and love.

Tips for the Host & Hostess:

– Dinner is theatre, and as the host or hostess, you are the director.

– As a host, try to toast your guests at some point during dinner. Even a very simple, “We’re so glad to have you all here!” is all it takes.

– A good hostess enjoys her dinner party as much as her guests do.

In addition to tips and questionnaires, Dinner Diaries features a section in the rear which is like a traditional hostess book. The traditional hostess book provided a place to list the menu, seating arrangements, flowers etc. of a particular dinner party so that you could remember what was successful and what wasn’t, what was served, who came  – to prevent repetition and encourage creativity. The book provides you with enough space for ten dinner parties, but let’s be honest, after reading Dinner Diaries we are going to be hosting much more often! So once you have filled the pages that Cappello provided in Dinner Diaries, it might be time to invest in a hostess book from Graphic Image.Graphic ImageAvailable in three colors and the ability to be personalized, these Graphic Image Entertaining Books are exactly what you need to record all the fabulous dinner parties that you have hosted. Move over Jackie.

Dinner Diaries: Reviving the Art of the Hostess Book is available through Assouline.

Good morning Lacquered Lifers! Sorry for the radio silence over the last few days – Mr. B and I are just getting back from a whirlwind couple of days in NYC. Although we have adopted Charleston as our home and embraced the Lowcountry lifestyle, New York will always be where Mr. B and I grew up and thus holds a special place for us. When we venture up to NYC, we are typically running around catching up with friends and trying to visit some of our old neighborhood haunts. Here’s a little recap before I get back to all things Lacquered Life tomorrow. IMG_6294Sant Ambroeus, the best coffee in NYC. And the best biscotti. And the best little sandwiches on brioche. And gelato. Despite the fact Sant Ambroeus now has locations in the Loews Hotel, Soho, and the West Village, I am an Upper East Sider and thus frequent the location on Madison and 78th Street. You know what’s great about your neighborhood coffee place in New York? You walk in and it is like you never left – the regulars say “long time no see” and the baristas ask you where you have been and say you have been missed. It’s like we never left …
IMG_6298My dear friends L & R just moved into a new UES apartment that is absolutely wonderful … and it has a roof terrace. What a lucky couple and what a lucky girl I was to get to hangout with friends looking at the skyline. IMG_6306Friday meant venturing out of the city to see a new client’s c. 1903 home. Finding little treasures like this made my day, and I’m so excited to be involved with this project. IMG_6318The evening meant some music and martinis at Bemelmans with Mr. B before heading to our favorite neighborhood italian restaurant with my brother and his girlfriend. What I love about Bemelmans is despite the cost of the martini they keep bringing you nuts, cape cod potato chips, and cheese straws so you can effectively eat dinner for the price of a martini. IMG_6326Finally, what would a trip to NYC be without a burger and some cottage fries at Melon’s? It wouldn’t be much of a trip at all. As always thanks for following on Instagram and here at Lacquered Life. Come back tomorrow when we will be back to our regularly scheduled programming.
